Company Name

Help with choosing a company name

Once you have decided on a name enter it into the box to the left. Click the "check availability" button to see if the company name is available.

A company name search will present three outcomes:

Guidelines for choosing a name:

  • Do not choose company names that include reserved words. Words such as ANZAC, QUEEN and BANK require special consent from the relevant parties.
  • Do not use offensive words as these will be rejected
  • Words not found in the Macquarie dictionary will not be rejected, however they will flag your order for manual approval. An application can only be approved during business hours, so this may delay your application.
  • For more about choosing a company name and for a full list of reserved keywords see the ASIC naming document.
Frequently Asked Questions
  • No, offically your company name will be registered with ASIC in uppercase letters. All companies registered with ASIC will appear on their database with uppercase letters.

However, you can still trade with your lower case alternative. I.e. "MyCompany" will be registered as "MYCOMPANY PTY LTD" but can use "MyCompany" on business cards, etc.

  • Enter your business name as the company name (note: PTY LTD will be appended to its name). You will then be asked to enter your ABN or business numbers (depending on when you registered the name).

Once you submit your company application it will be marked for manual review as it is identical to a registered business name - this process typically takes 2-4 business days.

  • All the name ending options (e.g. PTY LTD, PTY LIMITED) are all legally identical. It is simply a matter of styling preference. Some people prefer dots between the PTY and LTD, some prefer PTY LIMITED.

Note: PTY LIMITED is not to be confused with a public company.

  • If your name is marked for manual review and it does not get approved by ASIC then the name will be rejected and you will be asked to resubmit with a new name.

In order to resubmit you will visit "My Account" on EasyCompanies and click resume next to the application. Then edit the name and proceed to the final step to re-submit your application. Note: you will not be charged again for the application.

If you no longer want to register a company then please let us know and we will cancel the pending payments and unsubmit your application.
